This has been the hardest of all of my reviews to write.  I have had "writer's block" for more than a month.  Why?  Because this simply is the VERY BEST restaurant in Fort Wayne - HANDS DOWN nothing I can type will do it justice.  This is a MUST VISIT establishment.  Put it at the TOP of your dining list and DON'T WAIT ANOTHER DAY!!!!!
IF YOU ARE EATING ANYWHERE ELSE, YOU'RE WASTING YOUR MONEY!!!!!

What makes this restaurant above almost everywhere else?  Read on - you'll see . . .

FIRST IMPRESSIONS

During our mid April visit, the weather was still volatile to have annual plants in the urns that flanked the front doors so instead of just having ugly urns of dirt, BS had placed beautiful grapevine wreathes around the tops and had beautiful accents in various heights to keep it visually interesting and aesthetically pleasing.  Nice first impression, guys!

The customer service at Baker Street WILL NOT DISAPPOINT YOU.  Other than EM's, we have not found ANY restaurant during our travels that comes close to the exceptionally high level of service you will experience at Baker Street.  Allen L entered the restaurant and was immediately greeted by the hostess.  When asked if the restroom was in the back, the hostess physically walked her back to it.  That didn't cost anything, but created a great first impression for the guest. We were seated in the bar where we were greeted by a very friendly and knowledgeable bartender.  It's pretty much a 3 Elles mantra - "the quality of the service can make or break an entire dining experience" - Baker Street gets 5 stars, an A +, or 2 thumbs up - whatever your rating scale is, you'll experience the very best service at Baker Street!

MARTINIS
You know how the 3 Elles LOVE their martinis and Baker Street has some of the BEST in town AND at a reasonable price (gotta LOVE Martini Mondays!!!!!).  We started off with a round from their orderly martini menu (kudos - it's hard to believe that just having a menu warrants a pat on the back, but regretfully many establishments in FW haven't quite caught on to the importance of such a minor thing!).  We started off with a "Strawberry Fields" and a "Banyan Tree". The drinks were both delicious, but do you notice anything missing in the photo below?  Long time readers surely answered - GARNISH!  That's right, a small fruity accent "seals the deal" and makes the drink visually appealing.  It is the lack of garnish on our drinks that is our ONLY suggestion for improvement to the BS staff.

The Banyan Tree (left) was very tropical and arrived with a creamy deliciousness that left us desiring a cabana boy in the islands.  The Strawberry Fields martini (right) arrived a little too sour initially, but after a quick remake by the bartender, it was ohh soo sweet and delicious!  You can't go wrong by ordering either one of these delights!  For round 2, we opted for a Vanilla Bean Martini and Momo'Taro.  Wow, if it is even possible, round 2 was more euphoric than the starting line up. Tragically, round 2 also arrived naked :(

The Vanilla Bean Maritni (left) was described by Allen L as " a vanilla cloud of YUM!"  That pretty much sums it up, but just in case you are eager for a more thorough description, here you go.  This pure white glass of heaven is light and airy while having a frothy top coat.  Those of you old enough to remember, this drink will take you back to the "old school" Vanilla French Chew candy.  This is simply a MUST TRY drink!  The Momo'Taro (right) was very good.  It was sort of reminiscent of a Fuzzy navel with it's peach vodka and orange juice.  But this isn't a boring drink -it's punctuated with moscato.  This light, fruity, delicious concoction will leave you wanting more!

Lastly, we had the fabulous luck to speak with Bart.  Bart was our server during our very first visit.  He was amazing and as a result of his stellar skills, he had been promoted to marketing.  He came to our table and we had a delightful chat.  During our first visit, he suggested that we try a martini that he created - it was unbelievable!  This drink is completely a fruit punch . . . for adults- smooth, sweet, cold, and oh so delicious!  We asked Bart if it was possible to get a round of his specialty drink and POW, it arrived.  We have started a campaign to have this incredible beverage renamed the "Bart-ini!".  Go now to Baker Street, do not pass go, do not collect $200 (okay collect it if you have a chance), but go directly to the bartender and order a Bart-ini!  You will not be disappointed!  It's a winner.  Thanks Bart for stopping by our table and congrats on your promotion!!!

APPETIZERS
Per our usual, we started things off with Bruschetta.  This was extremely delicious.  It has a fantastic consistency packed with intense flavor.  It's beautiful presentation got our mouths watering even before the plate hit the table.  I know you are looking at that picture and wanting an order right now - call them, make reservations for tonight - tell them the 3 Elles sent you.  You'll have no regrets!

 ENTREES
Sitting in the bar, we had access to order anything on the menu (unlike another restaurant on Jefferson which will remain nameless. . . for now), though on this night, we opted for their special - bison burgers!  We could get it topped with whatever we wanted.  We selected blue cheese, bacon, sauteed onions and mushrooms.  It was presented with lettuce, tomato, and red onion.  The top photo shows it being paired with Bistro Chips while the bottom photo the gigantic low-fat burger is paired with their Colossal Onion Rings.  The burgers were prepared to perfection.  Although we ordered them well done, they were anything but dry.  The chef took special care to ensure the meat remained juicy and delicious.
The Bistro Chips arrived warm and paired with a homemade condiment.  Not familiar with the BS Bistro Chips?  Most importantly, they are freshly made to order.  They are not as greasy as regular potato chips and not as thick as kettle chips.  They were made from over sized potatoes and were crisp and fun to eat.

You absolutely MUST try their onion rings.  This is our 3rd visit to Baker Street and the rings are just a "given" that they will be ordered.  They are huge and could easily feed a small nation, but worth every single calorie.  The complimentary condiment pairs oh so nicely!
DESSERT
This is likely the hardest part of the review to write.  There are no words for service that was so far above and beyond that I'm sure it was seen in outer space.  Per our usual, we asked to speak with the manager in order to let him know that we had enjoyed our service and food up to this point.  James, the manager, is just fantastic.  He is kind and fun, but also mature and wise.  We enjoyed our conversation and were thrilled that he came to our table.  You can tell that James really enjoys his job and is passionate about creating exceptional memories for people.  When he found out it was my birthday, he immediately said, "I want to have the chef create this special apple dessert for you."  James told us the story of how his culinary staff created this special surprise for a couple who had left another restaurant in order to have dessert at Baker Street - and it was such a HUGE hit that he wanted to have it made for me to get our opinion.  2 words - HOME RUN!
It was absolutely delightful. The puff pastry  and caramel apples paired with vanilla ice cream topped with cinnamon brown sugar crumbles was unbelievably inspired and the perfect ending to our perfect meal during our perfect visit.  The caramel drizzle was just the punctuation needed to set this apart from everything else in the Summit City!  Thanks James and the chef for working overtime to create this special dessert in honor of my birthday.  You all ROCK!
SERVICE
We were lucky to be taken care of by Amanda (the original she says, not to be confused with Mandy who I'm sure is very good also).  Unlike EM's where they have water boys, at Baker Street, your server takes care of your every need.  Despite having a packed bar, Amanda constantly kept our water glasses full - you know the 3 Elles are heavy water consumers!  Not only was she very knowledgeable about the menu and restaurant, but she was very personable and engaging.  She was humorous and polite and perfectly comfortable dealing with the diverse dining patrons.  Definitely ask to sit in her section - you'll leave feeling completely pampered!

FINAL THOUGHTS
This is undeniably the best restaurant in FW.  There are some close 2nds, but for food, service, and value, Baker Street stands head and shoulders above the rest!  Make reservations and enjoy this fine dining and fun establishment today!  Tell them the 3 Elles sent you!

ATMOSPHERE:
The Southwest location is a bit more upscale than the Broadway location used to be. It's modern edge enhances the overall nautical-theme. For example, look at this woven brass lamp shade which adorns each booth's drop light. The contrast of rustic metal atop a delicate satin taupe colored shade encapsulates the entire establishment's atmosphere.

APPETIZERS:
We began by ordering our standard Goat Cheese Bruschetta. At the Chappelle's north, I LOVED the stuffed jalapenos so I decided to order them at the Southwest location as well. Both appetizers arrived promptly and beautifully.

Here's a close up of one slice -
We really enjoyed the taste and presentation; however, it needed to be toasted longer as the center of the bread was soggy - much the same consistency of French Toast. Both Allen L and Adams L enjoyed the ends as they were crispier than the center. I didn't mind the middle, but it definitely wasn't a true bruschetta.

The homemade Stuffed Jalapenos were good, but not a must-have. They were well made and consisted of a flaky outer breading and oozing center of of cheeses and crab goodness. These were a bit more spicy and a lot less impressive than the former Chappelle's North location. We all agree they were okay, but not awesome.

MARTINIS:
We began our evening with a round of Martinis featured on their extensive martini menu (hooray for a martini menu!!!).

Allen L began with a Caramel Appletini (left) which was basically a very well made Appletini but had too little caramel to notice. It's beautiful presentation and smooth green apple jolly rancher taste left smiles and giggles all around.

I began with a Blue Falls Martini (center). It's stunning blue color and sword piercing cherry garnish were interesting; however, the martini lacked any distinctive flavor. It was delicious and provided a great end of the day escape, but it was not over-the-top extraordinary. I have ordered it in the past and it never disappoints, but it also does not scream "order a second one".

Adams L started off her evening with a Pink Martini (right). Perosonally, I thought it tasted like cough syrup (Robitussin in particular); but Adams L really enjoyed it. She said it was strong, but really tasted the raspberry flavor and would definitely recommend it.

Later, we tried a second round. I tried a Double Fudge Martini. Doesn't that sound like a chocolate dream? Regretfully, it sounded way better than it tasted. It had a liquor in there which didn't please my palate. Allie, our server, provided classy customer server by removing it from my tab. She said, "If you're not going to drink it, I'm not going to charge you for it!". That's how to take care of a customer - be on alert other eateries. Allie didn't have to get the manager, or argue with the customer, she just took care of the patron - thanks Allie!

Allen L ordered a Key Lime Martini which is technically not on their martini menu, but is featured as an ice cream drink on their specialty drink menu. Those who read the Chappelle's North review, might remember Super Bar Star Sarah created an out-of-this world Key Lime Martini - we were hoping it would be half as good as her creation was. It was pretty in it's presentation with it's kiwi sauce lined glass and cherry garnish, but a graham cracker crust would have put this drink into a category all by itself. It was good, but not as magnificent as the former North location.

SALAD & BREAD:
For the first time, in our 3 visits to Chappelle's, Allen L ordered the side salad with house dressing rather than the off-the-chart Crab Slaw. The salads are fresh and delicious, but it is definitely not as special as the Crab Slaw. Allen L suggested whole olives rather than sliced and croutons might take this salad up a notch.

The bread was exactly as it has been at the other 2 former locations. It's really delicious and was served warm - yum!

ENTREES:
I ordered the same Almond encrusted Walleye that I've ordered at the other 2 locations. This was definitely the most disappointing of the 3 locations. It was so bland and boring. I had to ask for hot sauce and doused it with salt and still could barely tolerate the overal blah breading but fishy flavor. I ate 1/3 of it and was uninterested in boxing up the rest to bring home. It was paired with one of the 3 possible sides - roasted red potatoes. These were good, but an odd pairing with fish. At $23.99, it's definitely not a good value. I would recommend selecting something else.

Adams L ordered her Chappelle's "usual" Chicken & Shrimp Salad. It colorful presentation adds to the overall sensory appeal of the dish which is punctuated by the vine-ripe freshness. It's plentiful portion size is paired with the raspberry vinaigrette dressing which is a refreshing and light selection.

Allen L ordered the Seafood Pasta and was able to have it customized to accommodate her preferences. The dish is typically served with mushrooms and scallops, but Allen L ordered double shrimp instead of scallops and to hold the mushrooms. The chipotle cream sauce gave the dish a bit of spice and the dish an overall dimension in color, flavor, and texture. The overly large portion size would make for a wonderful dish to share with your spouse, but in this case, was boxed up for a delicious lunch to be had the next day. The thickness of the fettuccine noodles played off the delicate cheese shavings to create a palate delight. Allen L enjoyed the dish and would recommend it.

DESSERTS:
We were pleased to hear that despite closing 2 other locations, the owner's wife's friend still makes the desserts from scratch. We've enjoyed these homemade sweet endings at the other locations and sure enough - they were featured at this location as well. Below is the menu which should be updated since the Pumpkin Pie is only seasonal (Thanksgiving) - and it's nearly 6 months later; however, kudos once again to Allie, our server, who was prompt to point out that they were out of Boston Cream Pie and Pumpkin Pie.

I had my "usual" white cake. Same presentation and flavor as the other locations. It was good. It's really a great ending to a Chappelle's meal. The pillow of whipped cream and ribbon of raspberry sauce are nice "condiments" to the cake. Although the white cake isn't anything fancy or creative, it is delicious and thus I would definitely recommend this dessert selection!

Allen L selected the Key Lime Pie - shocker! The limey flavor was fresh like Spring and very refreshing. The presentation was pretty and the dessert was very good. Pucker up for a serving of this soon!

Adams L made a first time choice - she selected the New York Cheesecake with raspberry sauce. It was very smooth and creamy exactly as a NY cheesecake should be. This dessert could have been made a touch better had some of the sauce been drizzled atop rather than just adorning the plate.

SERVICE:
We were greeted and seated quickly and pleasantly. Allie was our server and as has been noted above, she provided us with exceptional service. She was kind and knowledgeable. She was prompt and attentive - for example, our water glasses were never empty! Allie is very likable so you should definitely ask to be seated in her section on your next visit.

FINAL THOUGHTS:
It is important to say that this was our BEST experience at Chappelle's out of our 3 total visits. The 3 Elles agree, though, that this restaurant is a nice place to eat, but is in no way a $25/plate kind-of-place. We recommend that you try this establishment, but be prepared to receive a significant bill for modestly tasty food.

Blu City Tavern

2787 Maplecrest Road
Fort Wayne, IN 46815-7037

http://thecatablugrille.com/Home.aspx

FIRST IMPRESSION:
The outside of the restaurant is rather plain, though stylish with it's black and white accents. It's lack of personality does nothing to prepare the customer for what to expect about his upcoming dining experience, nor does it do anything to welcome approaching customers - in fact, I waited in the parking lot until another "Elle" arrived fearing it might not be open or it might be a "hole in the wall" type of place. The exterior does not say "Tavern" let alone "fun, exciting, happening". It certainly doesn't do anything to peak the curiosity of those who travel passed it daily - maybe not the best marketing strategy, especially after a re-fit.

There is a quaint outdoor seating area (obviously not in use during our February visit); however, we were told that it's typically packed with smokers during warmer weather. Bummer - you know how the Elles enjoy alfresco dining.

ATMOSPHERE:
The Blu City Tavern is formerly the Blu Tomato. The restaurant recently underwent a renovation and re-launch. Having not had the opportunity to dine at the Blu Tomato, I'm unable to compare the decor to the former, but now - it's a mix of farmhouse country and clean modern. The entrance is very much country charm with its furniture and accessories, but the black wall paint and shiny fork/spoon silver accents keep it a bit more mod.

Further inside the restaurant is the wood burning oven which is more of the warm country feeling, but juxtaposed with more black paint, black faux-leather covered booths and black wooden accents.

APPETIZERS:
Here is part of their appetizer menu -

We opted for the former Catablu favorite - Flat Bread and Olive Spread. This used to be complimentary, but no longer . . . it's now a $3 appetizer. It's not that the price is excessive, but the Elles agree - it's not something someone would "take the leap" and buy it if they've never experienced the joy that comes from partaking in this unique pre-meal delight. In customer service, there is something called "The Pickle Principle" (click HERE to learn more). This principle comes from a deli-style restaurant that presented each sandwich with an amazing pickle. Customers chose this one restaurant because they knew they could get a great pickle. In competition for the customer dollar, a pickle was a small expense for the restaurant compared to repeat business, customer satisfaction, and customer referrals. One day, the eatery changed it's "free pickle" policy and began imposing a charge for seconds - this resulted in unhappy customers, loss of business, and negative publicity. Having just a month ago had free olive spread and now it's $3 - it might be in the interest of the restaurant to determine if this could be their "pickle". Even if there aren't free "seconds" - maybe a small portion could be served free and a larger portion could be on the appetizer menu. Worth considering - especially in this economy.

On this evening, we enjoyed the olive spread, but found the bread sticks to taste a bit stale and too stout. In the past, we've had a more flaky, cracker-like bread stick that compliments the dip perfectly. Despite the new charge and the displeasure with bread, it's still a very unique option in Fort Wayne and we strongly encourage you to give it a try!

We also ordered the Hummus - YUM! What a beautiful presentation - with it's rainbow colored veggies and triangle pizza bread surrounding the crock of Feta topped Hummus. This was most definitely a refreshing choice to the standard assortment of appetizers available at most other eateries. This healthier, lighter but filling option is tremendous and should be tried by everyone. Allen L had never had hummus and thought it was "pretty good especially since it is healthy". We all agree the pizza bread was phenomenal! Maybe the pizza bread would be a great pairing with the olive spread???

MARTINIS:
On the back of their awkwardly tall menus is their specialty drink list. There are some interesting options; however, the $10 sticker shock is a bit off-putting. We did learn that Mondays feature a discount on martinis, but we were there on a Thursday evening - sigh. Allen L started off with a Raspberry Truffle martini (left) while I began with a Pomegranate martini (right).
My Pomegranate martini was awesome -except if you're looking to have a temporary alcohol escape - this won't get the job done. It was very much like fruit punch and delicious. Here's a close up of the navel orange slice floating on the tasty sea of red liquor. I enjoyed the flavors but regret both the calories and the price tag. This is a good $7 martini - no chance it's worth $10 (which is more than the Berry White at Eddie Merlots which we consider "the gold standard in martinis)!

Here is a close up of the Raspberry Truffle. You'll notice the delicately shaved chocolate atop the frothy "adult chocolate milk" - yum! In my brief tasting, I didn't notice a strong raspberry flavor. Allen L was also disappointed in the lack of alcohol especially given the price. This may be an $8 martini, but again it's not worth $10.

Our server, Hayley, recommended the Sakemoto martini and Adams L took her up on the suggestion. Adams L really enjoyed the drink - far more than the rest of us. It's simplistic presentation with the subtle fruit flavor married with a potent alcohol punch. The Sakemoto was $9.

SALADS & BREAD:
Allen L's meal came with a Tavern salad and a small yeast roll (small indeed, the roll was embarrassingly tiny). She said the very colorful salad was good and very flavorful. She enjoyed the "poppyseedish" dressing (the menu indicates it's a Creamy Roasted Garlic dressing). Much care was taken to finely chop the veggies into bite sized pieces. This was a side salad which we were told is just a little smaller than their "small" size menu salads.

ENTREES:
Allen L selected the Spaghetti with chicken, shrimp and sausage, roasted mushrooms (she opted to skip those) in a creamy alfredo sauce. This $15.95 dish was extremely disappointing. For starters - why is an alfredo served with spaghetti and not fettuccine? Allen L said that if she were blind folded she would not be able to tell if she was eating the chicken, the shrimp, or the sausage. Each of the proteins was bland and boring. She suggested blackening the chicken chunks (and maybe making them strips instead of chunks), using spicy sausage (instead of something that tasted like breakfast sausage), and using larger shrimp (the handful of popcorn sized shrimp was VERY unimpressive). The palately boring entree could use some sundried tomatoes or red pepper flakes to spice it up a bit. Despite all the suggestions for improvement, she felt the sauce was the best part of the dish. She was so disappointed in her selection, she did not elect to take the remaining half home.

Adams L selected the recommendation of our server once again when it came time to her entree. Adams L chose the Southern Fried Chicken Sandwich, buttermilk dipped, white cheddar, tavern slaw, tomato, buttered bun. She swapped out the side of regular french fries with what our server called "The BEST sweet potato fries of all time!". Let me start by saying that Adams L did enjoy the multitude of flavors and textures that were going on with this sandwich. It is certainly a unique selection not likely found at any other eatery in the FW metro area. The sweet potato fries are cut like regular fries instead of the more common steak fry cut found elsewhere. They were seasoned with salt throughout and were prepared perfectly - crisp on the outside, soft on the inside and most importantly, not mushy.

This messy sandwich was served on a butter grilled bun. After cutting it in half, you can easily see that the chicken breast (lower right corner of the corner of the bottom bun) is less than half the width of the bun - pretty disappointing.

I chose another unique option, the Brat Burger featuring a bratwurst patty with sauerkraut, caramelized onions, whole grain mustard sauce on a Bavarian pretzel bun. I elected to swap out the side of fries with what I thought were just onion rings, but due to my lack of reading detail were actually tabascco onion rings - which we all STRONGLY disliked! Although this wasn't highly recommended by our server, she said it wasn't her favorite because of the sauerkraut. Being that my ancestors are from Germany, it's in my blood to like brats and sauerkraut. I thought this sandwich sounded like such a great idea. It was, in fact, very good. I enjoyed it very much; however, it wasn't anything special. Any Hilshire farms brat and canned sauerkraut would taste the same. The pretzel roll sounded special but really didn't taste anything like a pretzel - it was mostly just a sturdy bun.

I cut the sandwich in half - you can see the delicious whole grain mustard. Delicious, but not something I will be rushing back to order again in the near future.

DESSERT:
They had several choices that sounded terrific.

But, once again, Hayley made an outstanding recommendation - we went with her fav "Warm Apple Tart". Let me just say that this is very likely the best dessert we have ever eaten. We cut it into 6 pieces and each ate 2 -we even licked our plates -the homemade caramel sauce WAS.THAT.GOOD! The buttery flakey crust was prepared so perfectly - it was light, but flavorful. The apples were sliced so precisely that they danced in our mouths with ease. The homemade caramel sauce is hands down worth the drive over to this restaurant all by itself. Honestly, I cannot think of any adjectives to describe this dessert that would remotely do it justace. It's devine - heavenly - extremely well prepared. The scoop of cinnamon ice cream on top is just like the cherry atop a sundae - a perfect compliment. It's the perfect dessert - it's packed with flavor without delivering a heaviness at the end of the meal. You definitely HAVE to head over to Blu City Tavern right away for this dessert.

It was prepared, literally, in front of us. That's Ryan using his magical wood burning oven wand to perfect our apple tart. See that round dough thing in the oven - yep - that's where the "amazingness" begins.

SERVICE:
We had exceptional service. Definitely ask to be seated in Hayley's section and you'll be well taken care of. She was patient, knowledgeable, and enthusiastically ready to provide customers with a great experience. She kept our water glasses full, kept the pace of the meal comfortable, and made outstanding recommendations for everything from our drinks to entrees to dessert. Hayley had asked if we wanted to meet the owner, Michael, which we thought would be fun. Michael came to our table. We explained that we had driven far and that we had actually tried to come to this restaurant a couple of weeks earlier only to find out it was closed. Michael was nice and greeted us kindly, but could really benefit from some "above and beyond" customer service training. Adams L was seated next to a hole in the studs and was experiencing a severe cold draft on her shoulder. We pointed this out to the owner who said, "We'll have to get that fixed." Do you think?!?! Well . . . what about doing something about it right then and there - nothing else, how about asking if we would like reseated in the very uncrowded restaurant? Other options could have included, especially when we stated we drove a great distance to dine there not once, but twice in the last month. Knowing that we are having a GNO, might provoke some owners/managers to do a little something special to guarantee the evening is a great one for us and ensure our repeat business (free appetizer, first round of drinks half price or on the house, free dessert, etc). Nope - not here! I don't want it to sound like we're looking for the free handout because that's DEFINITELY NOT the case, but many owners/managers go out of their way to take care of customers . . . it's called good customer service. No worries, since we were not made to feel special - we won't be rushing back again. There are far other more delicious places with far better prices where we feel far more valued.

RESTROOM:
Ultimately there was nothing seriously wrong with the restroom at the BCT; however, knowing that it was just closed for renovations, I would have expected things to be at their most pristine state they could ever hope to be . . . definitely not the case. Here is the air vent from the ladies' room - a little paint would surely go a long way to giving the appearance that A.) you care, and B.) your restaurant is clean and sanitary.

This is the light above the 3rd/4th stall in the ladies' room - that dark smudge is a dust bunny big enough to choke a cow. Really? What's the kitchen look like (no one knows now since I understand that in the renovation a wall was put up to block it from public view). For some, these restroom photos might seem hypocritical and they probably are. But my bill was $50 - I can spend that at any establishment . . . the little things matter!

OUR RECOMMENDATION
:
This restaurant now calls itself a Tavern so it should, in all fairness, be compared to other Taverns. It seems to differ from other Tavern-type restaurants in that the drinks are far more pricey, but offers a pleasant assortment of food options not typically found at other eateries. Although we would not rush to return, we will definitely find our way back to savor the Warm Apple Tart. The 2 other Elles give this 2.5 out of 5 (I'm might be inclined to rate it a 3).
